OUR STORY

Caring for this land since 1958 and still growing.

Parklane Landscapes began in 1958 with a simple conviction: that people deserve outdoor spaces that are both beautiful and ecologically sound.

Founder Casey Van Maris, alongside his wife Monica, built that belief into a company rooted in the landscapes of Central Ontario. Their daughter, Anna van Maris, grew up in the family’s garden centre, reading blueprints by the age of eight. She carried that foundation forward and helped shape Parklane into the business it is today.

In 2022, Anna’s daughter, Cassie Zalewski, became third-generation owner, carrying Parklane into its 65th year.

She did not start in the office. She started in Garden Care, moved into construction, earned her D-Licence and crane operator certification, and spent years with the cab of a 7-ton as her office. She understands quality from the ground up.

That continuity of knowledge, standards, and genuine care for the land is what clients see and feel in every landscape we create and care for.

With Parklane Landscapes, sustainable is beautiful.

OUR EXPERTISE

Credentials that show up in the work.

Most landscaping companies can build something beautiful. Far fewer design with a deep understanding of native plant ecology, water management, shoreline protection, and long-term performance. That depth of knowledge is what Parklane brings to every project.

Our team includes a Master’s-trained landscape architect with an ecology certification and a therapeutic horticulture practice, certified horticulturalists with decades of hands-on experience in Ontario ecosystems, designers with backgrounds in environmental history and psychology, and tradespeople who have spent entire careers working in this region.

Sustainability is not an add-on here. It is built into how we read a site, select plants, manage drainage, protect waterways, and make decisions about materials.

After 68 years in this region, we see this not as a specialty approach, but simply how the work should be done.

Cassie Zalewski

President

Cassie's Journey into the horticultural field started at a young age on her mother’s herb farm. This is where an appreciation for Mother Nature and a connection with the environment rooted her for life. As Cassie spent much of her youth getting her hands and feet dirty in the field she always held an association to the earth and learned the true value of a hard work ethic.

Cassie joined the Parklane team full time after graduating college in 2006. Starting on the Garden Care team then the Construction team, she gained years of “boots on the ground” experience. Before moving into the role of operations and project manager

Cassie acquired her D License and Crane operator license and spent several years with her office being the driver seat of the 7ton. This instilled in her the importance of, organized logistics, efficiency, and material quality control. Throughout those experiences, Cassie developed a true love for uncompromising quality work and creating meaningful relationships with clients, suppliers and staff. This lead the way to her role as General Manager.

In 2022, Cassie proudly carried Parklane into its 65th year. As a third generation company owner, she plans to work hard every day to make choosing Parklane Landscapes the best choice for any homeowner looking to improve their relationship with their outdoor space. Cassie also wants to nurture a company where passionate people can grow together and make a difference to how we all understand and appreciate what Mother Nature offers us.

Anna van Maris

Past President - Certified Landscape Designer & Fusion Landscape Professional

Anna often says she grew up in a garden center. Between the ages of 4 and 15 Anna’s back yard was the Parklane Retail Garden Center on Finch Avenue, Toronto. She boasts that she was able to read blueprints by the time she was 8 years old and her super power is to draw the perfect inch.

Anna attempted to pursue a career in environmental studies attending University of Waterloo 1980-1981 but the lure of residential landscape proved to be too enticing for her.

More suited to healing the earth “one garden at a time” Anna refocused her education and graduated from Humber College Landscape Technology program in 1983.

Anna’s creative inspiration, like that of her father, is heavily influenced by Ontario’s northern beauty. Anna’s secret passion is to create the perfect outdoor classroom for classes in ecology, food security and herbal medicine.

What This Means for You

What you get when you
work with Parklane.

We do not measure success by how a project looks on install day. We measure it by how it performs years later.

Whether the landscape continues to function properly. Whether plantings establish and thrive. Whether the space becomes easier to live with, not harder.

That long view shapes every decision we make, from design through construction to long-term care.

01
A landscape designed for your specific site

Not a template applied to it. Every decision responds to what we observed on your property.

02
Plantings that thrive over time

Selected for this region, these plants establish, adapt, and improve year after year.

03
Water that moves the way it should

Drainage and grading that protect your property and the environment around it.

04
A relationship that lasts

The same team that designs your landscape understands it long after the work is done.

WORK WITH US

Let's talk about what's possible for your property.

Every landscape has its own water flow, light, and character. Our first conversation is about understanding yours, not selling you anything.

We discuss how you want to live in the space and how thoughtful design can bring it together; from patios and walkways to gardens, grading, drainage, lighting, shorelines and complete outdoor living environments.

Every element is considered as part of one cohesive design, built to function beautifully and last for years.

Our commitment: No pressure. No obligation. Just a thoughtful conversation about what makes sense for your property. We'll be in touch within 2 business days.
